My name is Lindsey Anderson, and I’m a freelance editor. I work primarily on novels, memoirs, and textbooks, but I’m also happy to edit papers, dissertations, and scholarly articles.

I charge my clients .0075 cents per word for a basic copyedit and 1 cent per word for a line-by-line edit. For .0125 cents per word, I also offer authors a comprehensive developmental edit.

My rates are considerably lower than most of my competitors, for a couple of reasons:

1. Although I’ve already edited dozens of novels, textbooks, papers, and academic articles, I’m still relatively new to editing. I worked as a copyeditor for two years and an in-house editor for one year before going freelance. I believe that I’m just as accurate, thorough, and insightful as my competitors, but I can’t justify charging my clients as much as editors who have been in the business for twenty years.

2. I don’t rent out an office, maintain a staff of employees, or rack up major business expenses. I don’t even pay for advertisements—I depend on word-of-mouth referrals to keep new clients coming to my site. I work from home, and I keep my overhead costs as low as possible. As such, I’m able to charge my clients less than most of my competitors.

I’m also confident that I’m able to out-perform my competition. I do more than just catch comma splices and split infinitives. I dig into each of my manuscripts, looking for plot holes, passive language, flat characters, and clichés—just about anything that could prevent a good book or paper from being great.
